Salt Lake Classic Set For This Weekend

Salt Lake City becomes the focus for collegiate women’s lacrosse on Friday through Sunday, as much of the Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League converges on Utah’s McCarthey Track and Field Complex and Westminster’s Dumke Field in the First Annual Salt Lake Classic.
Three of the top ranked Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates teams competing will be Salt Lake’s own D-II No. 3 ranked Westminster Griffins and No. 6 ranked Utah Utes on their home turf, and D-1 No. 3 ranked BYU Cougars.
BYU Cougars (D-I RMWLL) The Lady Cougars travel north to the site of their recent and convincing win against the Griffins. The BYU Women enter the weekend with a 7 – 2 record, their only setbacks being close ones to the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators Club, and the No. 1 ranked Michigan Club, the Wolverines needing overtime for their conquest of the Cougs.
Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (D-II RMWLL East) The School of Mines Women from the land of Coors look to be Golden in the City of Salt. The Lady Orediggers will attempt to pick and shovel their way into the win column, their only previous result this season being a loss to their neighboring Denver Pioneers.
Northern Colorado Bears (D-II RMWLL East) The Bear sows have come out of hibernation and bring their 2 – 3 record west from Greeley to forage for more.
UNLV Rebels (D-II WWLL South) The UNLV Women travel north on I-15 to put their 8 – 1 record on the line versus all 3 of the Beehive State’s WCLA Top 6, the Lady Rebel’s only blemish being an early-season stumble to a strong Stanford Cardinal Club.
USU Aggies (D-II RMWLL West) The Lady Aggies will travel south from the frozen north and celebrate their team premier in Salt Lake over the weekend. The Hansen sisters will escort the USU Women into their introductory effort.
UVU Wolverines (D-II RMWLL West) The Wolverine Women have already had a successful inaugural season, having won their very 1st outing vs. the Idaho Vandals, and a one goal loss at the final whistle to the Whitman Missionaries in Boise. Former Riverton HS standout Christy Jones, Bingham HS cohort Niki Ballou, and current American Fork HS coach Lindsay Gomm will lead the almost entirely freshmen UVU Ladies into Salt Lake.
Utah Utes (D-II RMWLL West) The No. 6 ranked Lady Utes could be rude hosts as they try to improve upon their 8 – 2 record, their only losses coming at the tip of the D-I USC Trojan Club’s swords, and defending WCLA National Champion Chapman Panther’s claws. The much anticipated showdown with the Griffins will have to wait, as the WCLA’s No. 3 and No. 6 will take the draw on 4/10 @ Dumke. Among the Utah Women defending their home turf will be Alta HS All-American Taylor Dunn and Cody Rennert, Park City’s Traci Shurtleff, and Boise’s Katy O’Neil.
Wyoming Cowgirls (D-II RMWLL East) The much-improved Cowgirls are one of the more seasoned RMWLL squads, having competed since the 08/09 spring season. The Ladies from Laramie look to lasso the lot and improve upon their 3 – 3 record over the weekend.
Weber State Wildcats (D-II RMWLL West) Having only played a single contest in their existence vs. the powerful Griffins, the Wildcat Women are itching to sink their claws into the win column over the weekend, with a roster that includes former Skyline HS captain and current Skyline JV coach Madison Shingleton, and Hanna Lukes.
Westminster Griffins (D-II RMWLL West) The potent purple people look to ruin their guest’s visit to Dumke as the Griffin Women endeavor to expand upon their 6 – 1 record. Leading the Westminster Women in their house are leading scorer, Judge Memorial’s Chelsea Farrell, Brighton All-American Maggie HerrNeckar, Riverton’s Alexa Ferdig, and Olympus’s Lily Sybrant, among others.
