Soaring Eagle Flies Past East In Dominant Performance

Tuesday night the East High Leopards hosted the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle lacrosse team in what turned out to be a dominant performance by Juan Diego, beating East 14-2.
Juan Diego started strong and never looked back. They began winning the first face off and ended up scoring on their second possession. The Soaring Eagle ended the half up 7-0. After the half East came out strong, putting in a quick goal, but Juan Diego’s attack was too much for them as they put in the next 5. East tacked one more on before Juan Diego finished them off with 2 last goals in the fourth quarter.
A number of things stood out for this Juan Diego team, the first being the goalie play from Juan Diego’s Sean Edwards and backup junior goalie Brendan Roberts. They stopped 16 of 18 shots on goal giving him n 89% save percentage. When asked about this, Coach Brad Tack said: “Sean’s been killing it for us” and said that he was one of the best goalies in the state along with Brendan. Of the two of them he said, “Both of them played excellent.”
JD East 2016 2A second thing that stood out was how Juan Diego was able to shut down East FOS Mikey Vetter, who last week put up an 85% win percentage against Lehi. When asked, Coach Brad Tack continued, “we knew that he was a good face off guy, we focused on our wing play and decided to try and make every ball a 50-50 ball and not let them get any easy ones.”
When asked about his overall impressions, coach Tack said, “I think we played really good defense, our focus all week has been defense and I think our defense really figured out how to play together as a unit.” This was apparent all afternoon as we saw shot after shot contested by Juan Diego’s solid defense. They followed through on every check and didn’t let East in the crease for any easy shots.
Juan Diego dominated from start to finish, never falling behind in the game and dominating on both sides of the field. They played hard defense and moved the ball extremely well.
Juan Diego’s next test will be at Highland on Thursday April 7th at 4:30, and East will take on Waterford at 4:30 on the 7th.
