Syracuse Earns Key Conference Win Over Bonneville

Connor Meyer

The Syracuse Titans beat the Bonneville Lakers by the score of 19-13 on Friday afternoon, earning a key conference win in the North/Ogden Conference.
Syracuse Midfielder Connor Meyer kicked off the scoring just a minute into the game. Bonneville then tied the game when Jordan Howe found Jared Johnson who slotted it home. The Lakers scored again on a man-up play when Austin Croyle nailed a top-right time and room step down for the goal. Syracuse answered right back with a man-up goal of their own when Meyer found Zachary Baird cutting down the middle. Baird caught it and scored to tie the game at 2. The Lakers were able to get two goals, one from Croyle and one from Howe to take a 4-2 lead with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. Caleb Hill caught the Lakers off guard and picked off an outlet pass and took it to cage, scoring with just 13 second left, making the score 4-3 for Bonneville after the first quarter.

Syracuse started the second quarter with a three goal run to take a 6-4 lead. Both teams traded two goals during a tightly contested second quarter in classic fashion. Bonneville was on the tail end of scoring in the first half when Alex Croyle made a nice back cut at the top of the box, losing his face-guarding defender, getting a pass from Johnson and bouncing it in to make the score 8-7 for Syracuse at halftime.
Alex Croyle tied the game at 8 in the third quarter but a four goal run by Syracuse would ultimately be the difference in the game. Bonneville was able to pull two goals back, then each team scored one goal to bring the score to 13-11 for Syracuse. Another four goal run by the Titans spanning several minutes in the middle of the fourth quarter put the game out of reach for Bonneville. Both teams scored two more goals before the Titans rushed the goalie with a 19-13 win.
“We came in and knew we had to come away with the win,” said Syracuse Head Coach Jay Meyer. “It was a solid win for us and a good team win.”
Syracuse was led by Meyer with 8 goals and 2 assists, winning face-offs at key points and scoring clutch goals at the right times. Meyer and crew also went 25 for 36 from the face-off X. Syracuse goalie Duncan Schofield had 9 saves.
“[Connor] is a leader on the field and his face-offs get us a lot of possessions,” said Meyer. “He’s got a great shot and a can play defense.”
Three Titans had four points with Hill and Stewart Tulane scoring 4 goals and Jackson Andersen had 2 goals and 2 assists.
“[Caleb] has always been a great player for us but he had a phenomenal game today,” said Meyer. “He stepped in due to some injuries and he stepped in and made it happen.”
Bonneville was led by Johnson who had 3 goals and 3 assists. Alex Croyle had 3 goals and 2 assists while Howe finished with 2 goals and 2 assists. Bonneville goalie Marty Adams had 9 saves.
On Tuesday, Syracuse will take on Brighton while Bonneville heads to Fremont.

  1. I think that the Titans defense needs to get recognized for the great job they did in the second half slowing down the Lakers offense. Kendall Jackson did an awesome job defending Alex Croyle. Way to go Titans.
