The Face-off: First Round of Playoffs

2016-SkyView-Logan-33The Face-off (formerly known as ULN Staff Picks) is back and in a slightly different format. We used to ask a few staff members to submit their picks each week, but The Face-off will now feature Team Haslam v. Team Nelson. Tim Haslam and Steve Nelson will pick a person in the lacrosse community to pick for their team. This week will feature Tim and Steve squaring off once again.
No. 10 Sky View @ No. 7 Logan (A)
SN: This is a tough one to pick: both teams have been a little up and down in the second half of the season–beating a really good team, then losing to a not-as-good team. Sky View won the first meeting, but it’s harder to beat the same team twice in a single season; I’m taking Logan, 9-8, in the rematch.
TH: I’m going to go with the visitors in this one. Sky View is riding a 5 game winning streak and has won 8 of their last 10 games. Sky View wins, 9-8.
No. 9 Jordan @ No. 8 Syracuse (B)
SN: These teams have had opposite seasons–Syracuse had a rough start, but figured things out and got some big upsets; Jordan started strong and faded down the stretch. I’m going with Uncle Mo (momentum, y’all) on this one and taking Syracuse by a deuce, 12-10.
TH: I think Jordan finds their groove and gets the W. Beetdiggers win 8-7.
No. 9 West Jordan @ No. 8 Woods Cross (C)
SN: I saw West Jordan in person when they got their only W this season, and they’ve got heart and some talented individuals. That said, I think Woods Cross is just too strong for them this year. Wildcats 13-8.
TH: I’m going to agree with Steve on this one for the same reasons, Woods Cross by 7.
No. 9 Jordan @ No. 8 Bingham (A)
SN: What a great match-up! These teams played down to the wire the last time they met, and I anticipate we’ll see much of the same this time around, which makes it a chore to try and guess the winner. Bingham’s been a little more consistent this year and is riding a win streak, so Uncle Mo says Miners in a close one, 11-10 in overtime.
TH: There is so much history in this rivalry which makes it an excellent first round match-up. The regular season affair was a one-goal game and this one will be no different except for the winner: Jordan by 1.
No. 10 Judge @ No. 7 Davis
SN: The Darts finished the season with an emotional upset win, but Bulldogs are always hungry. I’m gonna say that the big win leaves the Darts emotionally drained and Judge gets up for this game and pulls the upset, 8-7.
TH: Davis will come out on fire and hungry for their first playoff win since 2011. Davis wins 10-8.
