The Timpanogos Timberwolves beat the Herriman Mustangs on Monday in the semifinals of the 2012 playoffs by the score of 11-6.
The Timberwolves went on seven goal run, dominating all facets of the game. Briana Arnold scored two quick, identical free position goals for Timberwolves. Eliza Handley joined the action scoring on a fast break and again on a wrap around goal to give the Timberwolves a 4-0 lead. Herriman continued to battle but Timpanogos had great goalie play to keep the Mustangs from scoring. Herriman got on the board late in the first half, scoring back-to-back goals to bring the core to 7-2 in favor of Timpanogos. At the very end of the half, Herriman was clearing the ball but was called for an illegal check. Timpanogos had a clear path to the goal and took it, scoring as time expired to make the score 8-2 at halftime.
Herriman opened the scoring in the second half, going on a two goal run and rousing the Mustang faithful. The momentum was clearly with the Mustangs but neither team could find the back of the net for a long span midway through the second half. Timpanogos went on a two goal run to take a 10-4 lead allowing the Timberwolves to control the rest of the game. Herriman would score twice and Timpanogos would notch another keeping the Timberwolves perfect season in tact.
Timpanogos controlled 14 of 18 draws, giving them valuable possessions.
“We wanted to start off strong,” said Timpanogos Co-Head Coach Cyd Allbee. “It’s something we’ve struggled with in the past and the girls wanted to start the game the way that it should end and they did.”
“Eliza [Handley] played her best game today,” said Timpanogos Co-Head Coach Angie Maughan. “She went to goal whenever she got the ball.”
The Timberwolves will look to keep a perfect season alive when they take on Viewmont in the Girls D-II Championship game on Saturday at 10:00am at Brighton High School.
