all-american-showcaseThe 2012 All-American Showcase is to take place July 22nd-27th in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and two Utahns were selected to participate in the event: Elias Fairman from Brighton High School and Malia Stephens from Alta High School. Players are nominated and selected by coaches throughout the country.
Elias is an outstanding midfielder and he makes the game exciting to watch. Elias has started on Brighton’s varsity squad since his sophomore year and scored many of the team’s points his senior year. Elias’ coach at Brighton, Brandon Horoba, showed his enthusiasm and excitement about the Showcase, “This means a lot to me. For a kid that has worked as hard as Elias and improved year after year it is a great reward for him.”
Elias has committed to playing for Westminster next year. Coach Horoba also commented on Elias’ future, stating “I think it is great Elias will have the opportunity to play at Westminster. I know Elias is ready for the challenge of playing at the next level and he will do a great job. He is a great kid and has a bright future on and off the lacrosse field.”
Malia is also an amazing midfielder, named the D-I midfielder MVP in 2012. Her coach, Jeff Gorringe, had nothing but good to say about her. “Malia is an incredible young lady that not only excels on the lacrosse field but in the classroom as well. She scored a 35 on the ACT and was a 4.0 student. It was an honor and a privilege for me to coach her this last season. Very few young ladies will work as hard as Malia.” Gorringe also mentioned what this means to the Utah lacrosse community. “It is great for our state to have someone selected to this kind of Showcase. This will provide for continued growth and outside interest of the sport here locally. I am thrilled that she would be honored and invited to represent the state of Utah in the Champion All-American Showcase.”
Malia is currently is currently attending a summer lacrosse camp at Duke University in Durham, NC. According to Gorringe, Malia will walk on at this year at Duke. “There is no doubt she will represent the state very well.”
The All-American Showcase is a three-day tournament where four teams will match up. The girls play first, the 22nd through the 24th and the boys play the 25th to the 27th. Both finals will be streamed live by ESPN. For more information, visit this website .
