ULA Boys Juniors: Week 1 Recap

Utah Lacrosse AssociationFor Immediate Release – Utah Lacrosse Association
Salt Lake City – 4/24/2013 – The season is finally here and Week 1 is now in the books. For the 2013 season the Juniors have again been divided into 3 divisions: D-I, D-II, and D-III. D-I and D-II will play for their respective championships, while D-III will finish the year with the annual All Star game. This year 664 players from 15 programs formed 33 teams in the 3 divisions. Olympus again led the way in numbers with an impressive 91 players across 5 teams, and 2 new teams made their ULA debut, Bonneville and Roy. D-I has 8 teams and D-II has 14 teams, fighting it out weekly for a chance at the playoffs and a championship. 11 D-III teams will be working as hard as ever to develop the players for the future of their programs and some will be rewarded with a selection to the All Star game.
Last year 581 players from 14 programs formed 29 teams in the 3 divisions. Olympus had the largest program with 84 players and ULA welcomed the Northridge program to the league. D-I had 10 teams and Brighton won the championship defeating Park City in a thrilling 5-4 game. D-II had 9 teams and had their first ever championship game. Park City won its first ever boy’s championship (at any level) by holding off Waterford 5-4. The newly formed D-III had 10 teams and put on a great show at the All Star game. Many players on last years D-III rosters have made the jump to D-I and D-II for their programs this year. Brighton and Park City are both back looking to defend their titles, but it won’t be easy after watching this past Saturday games.
This past weekend in D-I action 6 of the 8 teams took the field. Defending Champs Brighton welcomed Bonneville to the league with an 11-3 victory and a reminder to everybody of why they are still called the Champ’s. Olympus defeated Herriman 3-0 and the young rebuilt Juan Diego team looked impressive in a 10-0 win over Davis. On the D-II fields 12 of the 14 teams were in action on Saturday. The following teams secured their first victories of the season: Jordan (11-6 over Riverton), Brighton (9-2 over Herriman), and 2012 Runner Up Waterford (7-1 over Judge). Both ULA newcomers won as well Roy (3-0 over Northridge) and Bonneville (3-0 over Davis). Everybody but Copper Hills Green, Davis, and Park City had games at the D-III level. This weeks winners were Jordan (9-7 over Riverton), Olympus Black (8-1 over Herriman), Olympus Gray (8-2 over Brighton), Olympus Silver (2-1 over Copper Hills White). And with that, the 2013 is off and running.
Every week I will recap the Junior Division and other important news from ULA. So, come back often to Utah Lacrosse News and look for my weekly column. On behalf of ULA, we wish all Youth lacrosse players a great and safe season.
