Unbeaten Jordan Falls In Upset Attempt of No. 8 Corner Canyon

The Jordan Beetdiggers girls team hosted the Corner Canyon Chargers in a fantastic matchup Thursday evening.  Despite the schools only being a few miles apart, this was only the second time these two teams have played each other in Corner Canyon’s five years of existence.  The previous game was a 12-9 victory by the Beetdiggers in 2015.

Corner Canyon came into the game with a 2-3 record despite playing some great lacrosse this season.  Their three losses came by the hands of Herriman, Lone Peak, and American Fork; three of the most dominant teams in the state.  Jordan, on the other hand, came into this matchup undefeated with an impressive 5-0 record. Both teams knew they would need to play a complete game to come away with the victory.

Corner Canyon won the opening draw and quickly scored as Ashton Whittle found the back of the net.  Minutes later the Chargers took a 2-0 lead with a goal by Venice Lupus. Down by two goals, Jordan found a way to strike back as the Beetdiggers would score the next three goals, one goal a piece by Emme Laro, Paige Williams, and Maya Thayne to take a 3-2 lead.  The Chargers would tie the game with a goal by Alayna Enniss only to have Jordan retake the lead with a goal by Lexi Burns. With Jordan leading 4-3 at 10 minutes remaining in the half, both defenses settled down forcing their opponents into turnovers and bad shots that either sailed wide or were saved by the goalie.  Corner Canyon was finally able to tie the score when Enniss was able to break free and score her second goal of the night with an assist by Sofia Chieco. This sent the game into halftime with the score tied 4-to-4.

Both teams knew that the key to winning this game would be to win the draw and control possession in the second half.  Corner Canyon did just that. With Ashton Whittle taking the draw, she was able to control the ball as the Chargers won the first six draws of the second half.  With this control of possession, Corner Canyon started to take a lead in the second half as they scored the first three goals in the second half; two goals by Andrews and a goal by Whittle.  Jordan would answer back with a goal by Laro, only to have the Chargers score two more goals of their own.

With her team down 9-5, Jordan coach Niki Ballou took a time-out to help her team regroup.  After the time out, Jordan’s Paige Williams won the ensuing draw and scored on a strong drive to the goal to bring the Beetdiggers back within three goals.  Jordan’s momentum would be short lived as Corner Canyon continued to win the draw and scored back-to-back goals by Andrews and Whittle.

With the score now 11-6 in Corner Canyon’s favor, Jordan’s Paige Williams showed why she is a force to be reckoned with.  After a great defensive play by Burns to give Jordan possession, Williams put her team on her shoulders and scored back-to-back goals to pull the Beetdiggers back within 3 goals with only four minutes left in the game.

The next draw would be crucial and Corner Canyon’s Ashton Whittle knew it.  She was able to draw it to herself to give Corner Canyon a much-needed possession.  The Chargers showed poise and patience with the ball and were able to put the game away with another goal by Andrews.

Jordan showed heart and did not quit until the final horn sounded.  The Beetdiggers won the ensuing draw and attacked the goal only to have Corner Canyon goalie Ella Chemianant come up with two impressive kick saves.  At the final horn, Corner Canyon was victorious with the final score 12-8.

Corner Canyon coach Taylor Dahl knew the significance of this game.   “It was an important win.” Dahl said “My girls played incredible tonight.  They played the entire game from the start to the final whistle.” When her team trailed early in the game, Dahl stated “It was hard and I was afraid they would get down on themselves, but they played through it and were able to get the momentum.”

Corner Canyon was led by Madi Andrews who scored four goals and two assists.  Ashton Whittle contributed with three goals, Sophia Chieco had two goals and an assist, Alayna Enniss scored two goals, and Venice Lupus had a single goal.

Jordan’s Paige Williams led the Beetdiggers in scoring with four goals and an assist.  Emme Laro added two goals, while Lexi Burnes and Maya Thayne each had a goal.

Both teams take next week off for spring break.  Jordan will look to get back to their winning ways as they play at Juan Diego on Tuesday April 10th.  Corner Canyon will try to keep their momentum as they travel to Copper Hills on Wednesday April 11th.
