The Utah Girls Lacrosse League announced their 2019 post-season awards. Post Season awards were selected by nominations from coaches and voted in a closed meeting by head coaches from the league.
All-State first and second teams are comprised of four attack players, four midfielders, four defensive players and a goalie. Players selected on the All-State teams represent the best players in the state as voted on by the coaches.
Coaches also selected an All-Region team representing the best players from each region (excluding those who already made it on an All-State team).
In addition to league awards, US Lacrosse has awards for All-American, All-Academic, Coach of the Year and the Jackie Pitts Award.
Recognition:
- The Utah Girls Lacrosse league will recognize the MVP’s, All-American, Academic All-American, Coach of the year, All-State first and second team at halftime of the DI championship game. That game will be held on Saturday May 18th at 3:30pm at Corner Canyon High School.
- The Utah Girls Lacrosse League will recognize the All-Region players at halftime of the Senior Showcase game. That game will be held on Tuesday May 21st at 7:45 pm at Skyline High School
MVP’s
Portia Card – American Fork – Portia was selected by the coaches as the Attack MVP for the 2019 season. Portia has great stick skills and is able to get her team involved as well. Portia was second in the league in goals (64) and second in assists (35). She has been great on the draw this year winning 64% of her draws. Portia was a driving force for her American Fork team who had a 10-2 record and a #4 seed in the Division I playoffs. Portia is committed to play at Fresno State next year.
Shaye Henderson – Park City – Shaye was selected by the coaches as the Midfield MVP for the 2019 season. Shaye is a do everything player for Park City as she is fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball. Shaye can score with the best of them, but it is not just her scoring that sets her apart. Shaye can see the whole field and has good decision making. It can be said about Shaye that she is playing chess while others are playing checkers. Shaye has been a leader for Park City on and off the field. Shaye has committed to play for Vanderbilt next year.
Sierra Savage – American Fork – If you did not get a chance to watch Sierra play, you are missing out. When watching an American Fork game, Sierra will catch your eye. She is an elite athlete who is also a goalie. Sierra understands the fundamentals of goalie play. She reads the shot and anticipates the play 3 steps ahead of others on the field. Sierra played as a defender on the field during her first two seasons with American Fork. Because of her experience as a defender, Sierra can often be found roaming outside the goal circle to create havoc for opposing attack players by becoming an 8th defender on the field, often times leading to a caused turnover. Sierra has committed to play for Central Michigan next year.
Coach of the Year
Melissa Nash – Brighton. After winning only a single game last year, Coach Nash guided the Brighton Bengals to 8-4 regular season record giving Brighton a #9 seed in the Division I playoffs. Brighton defeated Olympus in the first round before falling to Park City in the Quarter Finals. Coach Nash attributes the growth of her team due to their focus on lacrosse fundamentals, player development, and playing as a team. Coach Nash was chosen earlier this year to be the head coach of the Utah/Idaho U17 team that will compete over Memorial weekend in Baltimore, MD.
