Participating in the National Tournament is a tremendous opportunity for high school players to improve their skills, see lacrosse at the highest levels, represent the State of Utah, and have the opportunity to possibly be recruited to exceptional college programs. They are also given the opportunity to bring back what they have learned and provide clinics and assistance to our sports newest young players.
“The National Tournament began in 1933 as a tournament to showcase the best post-collegiate and club women’s lacrosse players. Since that time, it has grown into one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the nation. It is a true celebration of women’s lacrosse and continues to represent the heartbeat of the game. Tournament highlights include division championships, a U.S. Team exhibition, an annual high school all-star game and a premier recruiting opportunity for high school players.” ~USLacrosse.com
Utah’s top young women have been competing at the National Tournament since 1998, only missing two or three years in between. Depending on the region divisions throughout the years, they have competed as a solely Utah Team, Rocky Mountain Team (Colorado/Utah), and most recently Utah/Idaho Team. The number of player spots for these region teams per state is determined by the number of Varsity coaches registered with US Lacrosse for that year (this year for example Utah holds 17 spots, and Idaho holds 3). These Tournaments have been hosted in Baltimore, Maryland, Dublin, Ohio, Lehigh, Pennsylvania and Stony Brook, New York. Utah also sent a team to compete in the “Cup of Nations” in conjunction with the 2005 World Cup in Annapolis, Maryland. It is just in the past three years that the ULA has officially helped facilitate the Utah Chapter Team for the Women’s Division National Tournament.
The 2012 Utah/Idaho Team was selected during a rainy five hour tryout on Saturday, April 14th.
“I am confident that we selected a stellar team this year, and I am really excited to be a part of it.” said Utah/Idaho Head Coach Molly Jones. “We have our work cut out for us this year… after coming off of a very successful tournament outcome last year, it is possible that we will move up to a higher division with harder competition.”
The team will be joined by three players from Idaho and head out to Stony Brook, NY over Memorial Day Weekend.
“I’ve have been to this tournament a number of times as a player and as a coach and it is so fun to see teams from all around the country compete. It is always very eye opening and a great learning experience for each girl.” Jones added.
