Viewmont Rolls Past Rival Woods Cross

Woods Cross - Viewmont

The Viewmont Vikings topped the Woods Cross Wildcats Friday evening in battle of local rivals  The Vikings pulled off the victory 21-8.  Although it seems like the match was one sided from the score, it had all the attributes of an intense match as neither team gave up.
Viewmont went up 3-0 quickly in the first 4 minutes with goals from Matt Cena, Connor Clay and Kyle Higgins.  It didn’t take long after Higgins goal for the Wildcats’ Brayden Hudson to get them on the board.  It would be another 3 goals from the Vikings before the Wildcats would score again from Paul Evans.  Evans was in the right place at the right time to catch a rebounded shot and put it passed Viking goalie Zack Skok.  A minute later, in a man-up opportunity, Cena had a time and room shot from the top of the box to bring the score to 7-2.  A minute passed and the Wildcats found themselves in a man-up opportunity and capitalized on it with 50 seconds left in the game.  The Vikings didn’t give up, even with little time.  Cena again took the initiative and pulled the ball out, dodged right and bounced one in the back of the net with 15 seconds left in the first quarter to bring the score to 8-3.

Wildcat Head Coach Drew Shumway had a great talk with his team over the break.  Woods Cross came out on first with two great goals from Austin Smith and Keadon Adamson.  When the Wildcats play collected, they can produce goals.  The Vikings matched the two goals with their own, one from Connor Clay assisted by Drew Barnes.  Clay made a great cut and Barnes was able to nail the pass for a great combo.  As the half came to an end, Viewmont lead 12-6.
Both teams came out swinging, with Viewmont scoring first. Viewmont struck with a pass from Clay that was sent high above Higgins head, who was right on the crease.  Higgins not only caught the ball, but was able to quick stick it into the net.  The Wildcats answered with a goal from Brayden Lott on a man-up opportunity.  Viewmont then took over the game and ran with the score.  The third quarter wrapped up with the Vikings leading 18-8.
The fourth quarter was a battle of turnovers, with both teams fighting as if the game was tied.  Viewmont notched 3 goals from Jeff Bednar, Matt Cena, and Drew Barnes.  The Wildcats were not able to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 21-8 at the final whistle.
Brayden Hudson of Woods Cross got hat trick for the Wildcats, with a total of 5 points.  The Wildcats as a whole have so much potential, and never gave up the entire match.  After they work out a few kinks, this is going to be a great team.
Viewmont had 4 players, Cena, Clay, Higgins and Barnes, get hat tricks, with Barnes  and Clay leading with 7 points.  Viewmont’s passing was very impressive throughout the entire game.  They have perfected the give-and-go, and are can catch and pass in close situations.
Viewmont Head Coach Tom Clay was impressed with how his team played.  “They played well together.  They pulled it together, played some tough defense, the offense moved the ball around, went for good shots and were patient out there,” he said.  Viewmont is already looking forward to beating their other cross town rivalry as well, Bountiful.
“We have a personal goal to go undefeated at home. Our biggest challenge is Bountiful, our cross town rivals.  It’s the best game we have all season.  It’s a tough rivalry,” Clay said.  They host Bountiful on April 30.
Woods Cross looks to travel and play Copper Hills on Tuesday.  Viewmont doesn’t get a break from the action either.  They are hosting Timpanogos Monday evening.
