Waterford Advances to Quarterfinals with 10-4 win over Roy

The No. 5 seeded Waterford Ravens defeated the No. 12 Roy Royals on Tuesday in the first round of the Boys Class B playoffs. The Ravens played a complete game while maintaining control for all 4 quarters en route to a 10-4 victory.
Waterford scored the first two goals when midfielder David Meabon was able to lose his defender off-ball and streak down the middle, catching great passes from the wings and quick-sticking them into the back of the net. On the defensive end, Waterford was precious with its stick checking and great team play. Owen Pyper notched a goal late in the first quarter to give the Ravens a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
Roy scored its first goal when Ryan Titus snuck the ball in the 5-hole at the 8:35 mark. Waterford answered with a textbook fast-break: Meabon at the top to Henry Christiansen on the wing to Talbot Child on the crease for the easy goal. Meabon would complete the hat-trick at the 6:42 mark when Cavin Huntsman found Pyper on a slow break who found Meabon across the field. Meabon stepped down and ripped twine. Andreas Jorgensen pulled one back for Roy when we dodged down the alley but then face-dodged towards the center of the field, finding space to get off a bounce shot that found the back of the net. Dalton Skidmore slipped in a goal for Roy on a fast-break to make the score 5-3 at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to Waterford who once again played great team defense with goalie Tyler Cramer at the helm. Pyper had two goals while Child hit a buzzer-beater to make the score 8-3 for the Ravens.
Titus scored for Roy early in the fourth quarter but Waterford answered with two goals to close out the game.
“The difference was the determination from our senior class to win on our home field,” said Waterford Head Coach Dave Brattin. “We didn’t play to our expectations but the guys worked hard all the way to the end.”
Pyper led the Ravens with 4 goals and 2 assists. Roy was led by Titus (2g) and Jorgensen (1g, 1a).
The Ravens will head to No. 4 American Fork on Friday. Waterford will look to avenge a 8-7 loss in OT to the Cavemen on March 29.
