Waterford Edges Herriman 11-10

Justin Desautels

The Waterford Ravens were able to hold off the Herriman Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Herriman High School, using a strong first half that was good enough for an 11-10 win.
Waterford Attackman James Eardley opened the scoring at the 10:56 mark with a rip from the wing. Herriman answered with a goal by midfielder Braxton Thompson who dodged down the right alley and was able to get his hands free for the goal. Eardley scored again when he was able to shoot over his defender and bounce it in. The Ravens then went on a three goal run with goals by Justin Desautels and two by Luke Pyper to make the score 5-1 with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Herriman countered with a wrap around goal from Matt Everton, making the score 5-2 after the first quarter.

Herriman Midfielder Ben Richard scored his first of the game midway through the second quarter to bring the Mustangs within two goals. Waterford Midfielder Sam Schroeder was able to weave through several defenders for the next Ravens goal but was answered by Thompson who had a nice alley rip. Waterford grabbed their next goal by Matt West. Just as the half was looking to end, Waterford scored with 36 seconds left and then again with 14 seconds left to take a 9-4 lead into halftime.
Both teams would grab a goal to start the second half, but then Herriman found their groove and went on four goal run that started at the 2:56 mark in the third quarter and ended at 11:03 in the fourth quarter, making the score 10-9 for Waterford. The Ravens were able to extend their lead to two when Desautels had a nice quick-stick on the crease on a feed from West who was at X. Chantz Roberts was able to get the Mustangs within one goal again at the 4:25 mark, but that is how the game would end with Waterford escaping with an 11-10 win.
“We took better shots today and finished which is a problem we’ve had in the past and we really got after it today,” said Waterford Head Coach Dave Brattin.
West led the Ravens with 2 goals and 5 assists. Desautels finished with 3 goals. Michael Moody finished with 8 saves for Waterford. Herriman was led by Thompson who had 4 goals. Herriman goalie Nick Williams had 8 saves. The Herriman face-off crew went 11 of 18 from X with Ben Richard winning 7 of 9.
There is still one game remaining in the ULA D-I season with Park City and Riverton playing on Monday. A Park City win will make them the No. 2 seed with Skyline taking the No. 3 seed, Waterford the No. 4 seed and Herriman the No. 5 seed which would set up a rematch of this game on Saturday, May 10.
