WCLA Check-in: Westminster Griffins

Westminster Griffins LacrosseThe Westminster women’s lacrosse team is coming off an 18 win season in 2012, a 3rd place finish at the WCLA National Championships and second consecutive RMWLL D-II Championship. We talked with Westminster Head Coach Niki Harding about wrapping up their fall ball. The Griffins also announced they will be competing in the WCLA D-I next season.
“We are excited and ready for the challenge,” said Harding. “There are only 3 other D-I teams in the RMWLL but they happen to be 3 of the top D-I teams.  The preseason poll came out and Colorado State is ranked No. 1, Colorado is No. 7 and BYU is No. 8. We have our work cut out for us but my team will be ready.  We are excited about the growth of our program and that we are able to compete with these teams in D-I.”
Utah Lacrosse News: What are some things you can take away from this years fall ball?
Niki Harding: This fall our team has been able to focus on the basics and have been able to get used to playing together with each other.
ULN: Who are some players that fans should keep their eye on in the Spring?
NH: Chelsea Farrell, Angie Ham and Kaicee Beal. She is back for her Senior season and from her second ACL tear which ended her season early both her Sophomore and Junior seasons. Kaicee was a WCLA D-II All-American last year with stats from only the first few games. Lilly Sybrant, Maggie HerrNeckar and Makenzie Hekking at goalie.
ULN: What was your favorite off the field moment this fall with the team?
NH: This fall we had our team participate in the Griffin Cup. We split our team into three smaller teams and they had to compete against each other and earn points throughout the fall.  They earned points not only for lacrosse drills but also team name, costume and snowman making contest. This helped the team bond as well as work hard…they are very competitive even against each other!
