WCLA Salt Lake Classic Starts Today

2013’s first spring weekend in the Wasatch finds much of the Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League descending upon the University of Utah’s McCarthy Stadium for WCLA Division 2 collegiate action at the 3rd Annual Salt Lake Classic. Representing the RMWLL West are the Beehive State’s own USU Aggies, UVU Wolverines, and host Utah Utes; as well as Idaho’s Boise State Broncos. Traversing the Great Divide and representing the RMWLL East are the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers and the Wyoming Cowgirls.

Idaho is well represented as the Gem State’s Boise State Broncos have sparkled, bucking to a 4-1 record in 2013, highlighted by two wins in one-goal squeakers. Opening the season with one of them versus the UVU Wolverines, the Broncos look to repeat this weekend; and against the Whitman Missionaries, Boise’s best helped Bronco coach Tracey Garrett parrot that carrot with the Whits’ at wits end in a one-goal win.
Golden’s Colorado School of Mines girls are golden, and return to the City of Salt hoping to improve upon their 2-2 record at last year’ s Classic. The Lady Orediggers are anxious to get back in action, their only result this season a loss to a powerful Denver Pioneer Club way back in the wee days of March. If the price is right, Mines’ coach Bob Barker will bark at his Lady Orediggers to mine a repeat of last year’s win against the UVU Wolverines, and find a nugget of ore in the tailings of their shaft by the Lady Utes.
Utah State’s sophomore season is already a bumper crop, as the 1-0 Aggies sit proudly on their program’s first conquest, gained at the expense of southern rival Utah Valley in a 12-11 nail-biter. Cultivating a win for the farmers is not bafflin’ coach Kate Clafflin, as the Aggies plow south and try to harvest more.
Outscoring their opponents by an almost 4 to 1 clip (182-47) in 2013, and with rival Westminster having moved to Division 1, the Lady Utes are hovering in the heady hierarchy of WCLA D2 rankings, and could prove to be rude hosts for the weekend. Utah enters the weekend with a 9-1 record, including blanking’s of the San Jose State Spartans and Pacific Lutheran Lutes. The only setback for coach Celeste Harding and her Utes was a close 2-goal gambit versus the 11-1 Division 1 USC Trojan Club.
Utah Valley had the best freshman season of the RMWLL rookies in 2012 finishing with 5 wins, and the Wolverines will try to improve upon their current 2-4 season at this year’s outing at the Salt Lake Classic. The UVU women are salivating to avenge two earlier-season 10-11 white-knucklers; an opening-day bucking by the Broncos, and a raking by the Aggies in both team’s last game.
The rodeo is rowdy as the ladies from Laramie saunter to Salt Lake to put their 4-0 record in the chute. The red-hot Wyoming Cowgirl’s 2013 effort includes a scintillating double-overtime victory versus the Washington State Cougars. Galloping out of town with a win in last year’s Classic, the Cowgirls hope to lasso more, facing only one foe from 2012’s edition, that result out the business end of a competitive contest with the Lady Utes.

  1. What a great opp. for the young kids to see some next level lacrosse. And what a well written article.

  2. I’m a player for the Utah State Lacrosse team and I noticed that the facts were off. The score of the game was actually 11-10, and our coach is actually Travis Barrus. I didn’t want to come off as rude, but just felt like I needed to clarify.
