GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team reached the semi-finals of the MCLA National Championships by defeating Indiana Tech 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon at the Wenwood Soccer Complex.
Westminster improves to 16-5 overall this season and the second-seeded Griffins reach the semi-finals for the fourth time in school history and the first since 2010. Indiana Tech, the tournament’s No. 10 seed, ends the season at 9-7.
The Griffins took control of the game from the start as they outscored the Warriors 5-1 in the first quarter. Adam Marfice scored two of his four goals in the opening quarter. After leading 8-3 at intermission, Westminster scored five straight goals in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Westminster finished with a 39-24 edge in shots attempted and they put 32 of those shots on cage. The Griffins had a 29-19 advantage in ground balls and they dominated the faceoff-X by winning 17-of-24.
Elias Fairman matched Marfice with four goals in the game and he also posted one assist for a team-high five points. Brian Tyrrell chipped in three goals while Collin Madsen tallied four assists. Kevin Gee had one goal and two assists and Matt Hearn scored two goals. Chris Burckle made five saves in cage to earn his seventh win of the season.
Craig Schaepkens scored three goals for Indiana Tech and he also had an assist. Justin Famiglietti came up with 17 saves for the Warriors.
The Griffins will now have a day off before facing third-seeded St. John’s (Minn.) on Thursday. The tournament moves inside Sirrine Stadium and the opening faceoff is slated for 9 a.m. (MDT).
