Westminster Wins Home Opener, 15-8

SALT LAKE CITY – The sixth-ranked Westminster College men’s lacrosse team defeated Montana 15-8 on Sunday afternoon in the team’s home opener at Dumke Field.
Westminster returns to its winning ways after losing the last time out and they are now 5-1 on the season. Montana drops to 0-4 on the year with the loss.
The game was fairly even through the first 20 minutes. The Griffins led 3-1 with 43 seconds to play in the first quarter, but Montana got back-to-back goals from Patrick Shelso to level the game at 3-3. Westminster then took the game over, scoring six straight goals to open up a 9-3 advantage with 6:05 to play in the third quarter. UM would get back to within four, but the Griffins answered with three consecutive goals to seal the victory.
Westminster fired 54 shots in the game and put 30 of them on cage. They won 18-of-23 faceoffs while also going 4-of-14 with the man advantage. The Griffins collected 44 ground balls to the 18 by the Grizzlies and held the visitors to just 16 shots and 12 on target.
Gian Sexsmith and Matt Hearn finished the game with four goals and two assists apiece to lead all Griffins with six points.  Jake Arthur and Kevin Gee scored three points with two goals and one assist each. Brett Bird added two assists with Kyle Postler scoring one goal with one assist. Andy Butterfiled and Jamison Amonino also scored for the Griffins. Jeff Peters and Amonino led the way with six ground balls apiece and Marshall Serzen was 17-of-21 on faceoffs.  Chris Burckle earned the win in goal while making four saves.
Shelso led Montana with three goals and Henry Bishop scored two goals with one assist. Kent Davis scored twice with Andrew Wenzl adding the other goal.  UM was called for 14 penalties resulting in 10:30 minutes of time.
Westminster will now return to the road when they travel to Logan, Utah to face in-state rival Utah State. The game will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
