SALT LAKE CITY – Playing at home for the first time of the 2012 season, the top-ranked Westminster College women’s lacrosse team had no problem with first-year team Weber State on Tuesday on Dumke Field, defeating the Wildcats, 20-2.
Westminster extended their season-opening winning streak to six straight, making them 6-0 for the second straight season. They opened the 2011 campaign with eight consecutive victories.
The Griffins had no problem with the cold weather as they raced out to a quick 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. They would eventually score the first 14 goals of the contest and carried a 15-1 lead into the intermission. With the second half played in a snow storm, Westminster played a possession game to seal the win.
Kaicee Beal scored five of the team’s school record 20 goals in the game. Beal added on assist while attempting seven shots. WCLA Preseason Player of the Year, Chelsea Farrell, along with Sage Johnson and Jasmin Alves scored two goals apiece. Johnson added three assists to lead the team. Maggie HerrNecker led the team with four ground balls while five other came up with three ground balls.
The Griffins fired 32 shots in the game with 24 being on cage. They had a 19-4 advantage in draw controls and collected 32 ground balls to the 13 picked up by Weber State.
Next Westminster will welcome Brigham Young to Dumke Field for a game on Friday. BYU is ranked No. 8 in the WCLA DI poll and have a 3-0 all-time record against the Griffins. The game will begin at 5 p.m. and be broadcast live on Griffins TV.
