Men’s Lacrosse Team raises $2,800 for cancer and will hike to the institute to present check
SALT LAKE CITY — Hiking five miles with 40-pound backpacks may seem quite daunting to most people, but for 40 members of Westminster’s Men’s Lacrosse Team, it’s all in the name of charity.  On February 11, the team will march to the Huntsman Cancer Institute from the Westminster College campus to present a check for $2,800 to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
Over the past four weeks, the lacrosse team has been busy raising money and collecting sponsors for the “weighted” march to the Huntsman Institute. The team raised $2,800 for the foundation to support Huntsman’s cancer research.
“The lacrosse team has been working hard on and off the field trying to raise money for this important cause,” explained Brett Bird, lacrosse player and event coordinator. “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, so what better way to help prevent it than putting money toward our local research center.”
Bird hopes that the event will spark the team’s continued interest in service projects.
“We hope that this year’s march becomes a good building block, not only for the lacrosse team, but for Westminster Athletics to start doing fundraisers every year,” he added. “In the past the team raised $2,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and we hope to continue to help other causes in the future.”
