SALT LAKE CITY – The fifth-ranked Westminster College women’s lacrosse team defeated Utah State 19-4 on Friday evening at Dumke Field. The win clinches a second straight Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League West Division title for the Griffins.
Westminster is now 14-5 overall this season and they went a perfect 4-0 in league play. Utah State drops to 0-5 over all and 0-4 in league.
After the game was even at 1-1 with 27:51 remaining in the first half, the Griffins scored the next six goals to build a 7-1 lead at the 14:46 mark. They extend the cushion to 16-2 with 16:06 remaining in the second half before USU would score again. Westminster added another three straight goals to seal the win.
Dechie Sumampong finished with a career high nine points in the game. She scored four goals and tied a school record with five assists. Chelsea Farrell added four goals and three assists while Maggie HerrNeckar added four goals. All five seniors that played on senior day recorded a goal in the game. Carson Chambers, Jillian Tesfazion, Erin Foslid, Elisabeth Anderson and Maggie Anderson each scored a goal while Maggie Anderson added one assist. Makenzie Hekking recorded seven saves while picking up the victory.
Westminster had a 37-4 edge in shots attempted and picked up 34 ground balls to just 18 by the Aggies. The Griffins had 17 draw controls and went 1-of-6 on free-position shots.
Chele Lathroum led USU with two goals and one assist. Rachel Diedrich and Alyssa Hansen also scored in the game. Cathryn Hansen made nine saves in the Aggie cage.
Westminster will now be the West No. 1 seed in next week’s RMWLL Tournament. They will face the No. 2 seed from the East Division on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. The entire tournament will be played at Dumke Field with the first game slated for 8 a.m. and the Division 2 Championship scheduled for 4 p.m.
